New year, new chance to love Balboa Park in more and different ways! Are you getting the most out of your park? Here are some ideas to mix things up in 2020:
1. Find a new spot in the park to visit for the first time.
Grab the family and head out for a picnic in an entirely new spot! Stop by the Visitors Center and pick up one of our beautiful new maps of all the different gardens in the park and visit one you’ve never seen before. Take in a bicycle race at the Velodrome this summer. Or hike down Florida canyon when the spring flowers are in bloom.
2. Bring someone to the park who’s not a regular.
Just like a lot of Parisians have never visited the Eiffel Tower, you’d be amazed at how many San Diegans have never set foot in Balboa Park. Ask your friends and co-workers when they last visited their park! If you find someone who hasn’t, arrange to meet them for coffee and a museum visit, or to take a walk through Palm Canyon. Got dogs? Arrange a doggie playdate at Nate’s Point Dog Park.
3. Explore a museum you’ve never visited before.
With 18 museums around Balboa Park, even the most dedicated museum-goer might have missed one. Have you seen the beautiful Veterans Museum, located inside a former chapel on the east side of Park Boulevard? Kids and adults alike love the exhibits at the Model Railroad Museum. Check out up-and-coming local artists at the San Diego Art Institute, or delve into your city’s past at the San Diego History Center.
4. Volunteer at a Balboa Park Conservancy event.
Show your love for the park by giving back with your time and talents at a Conservancy event. We hold tree plantings throughout the year, and there are lots of other opportunities to participate. If plants are your passion, take it to the next level by becoming a Tree Steward or Garden Steward. If you’re more of a people person, look into becoming a Park Ambassador, meeting visitors from all over the world and giving them the best park experience possible.
5. Become a member!
Our donors and supporters are vital to help make Balboa Park the best it can be. Every inch of the park needs care and attention, making your support vitally important—and it’s tax-deductible. You can join as an Advocate for Balboa Park for free, or a Champion for as little as $5 a month. Support the restoration of the historic Botanical Building & Gardens, or become a Corporate Partner, creating team-building events through volunteering, private tours, and unique VIP park experiences for your staff, partners and clients. There are as many ways to show your support as there are trees in the park—find one that’s right for you!
