In Case of an Emergency, Be Prepared!

Sep 15, 2016

Did you know that September is National Preparedness Month?

In Balboa Park, many of the museums and institutions have developed safety plans for their patrons and guests should an emergency arise. This ongoing commitment to public safety is shared by San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E).

Last month, on National Dig Alert Day (8/11), SDG&E invited local media to visit its “Skills City” training facility in Mission Valley. Skills City is a full mock-up of a city neighborhood used to simulate emergency situations and teach employees how to safely and expertly detect and repair damage to natural gas lines. This specialized training at Skills City is one way SDG&E makes sure that the community is kept safe every day of the year.

At Skills City, SDG&E field employees learn how to master a wide variety of skills that are used to operate and maintain SDG&E’s natural gas delivery system. This includes detecting the release of natural gas around homes and under streets, fixing damaged natural gas lines, and using advanced sensors to inspect inside gas lines for any problems.
