Celebrating the Garden Stewards of Balboa Park

Dig in! Join the Balboa Park Conservancy for a virtual series all about native and climate-appropriate plants and engaging topics to help you “plant it forward” in your own backyard. Rooted in hands-on learning, our family-friendly virtual series features garden stewardship and education on climate-friendly plants, pollinators, and habitats.

Plant It Forward 2021 is a hands-on virtual event from May 1 to 8 celebrating the new Balboa Park Garden Stewards volunteer program. Join us and share your images, stories, and garden tips on social media.

  • Join us in an at-home planting—pick up a Narrow Leaf Milkweed or Pomegranate sapling at the Balboa Park Visitors Center and plant it at home (details below).
  • Spread the word—share our mini-videos as they launch on social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube)
  • Level up—support your local nursery and select your own climate-appropriate plants in celebration of Plant It Forward and our Garden Stewards launch!
  • Homebound? Be your own Garden Steward and enhance your landscape with these suggested activities

We’ve partnered with SDG&E to create a series of mini video tutorials.

Check out the links below to learn more about climate-appropriate plants, defensible spaces, pollinators, and much more. We’ll even supply you with your own Narrow Leaf Milkweed plant or Pomegranate sapling, available for pickup at the Balboa Park Visitors Center (while supplies last). Native and climate-appropriate plants nurture our well-being, help reduce the impact of climate change, and provide habitat for wildlife. Plant it forward today!

Kate Sessions is known as the “Mother of Balboa Park” for her work in landscaping the park in its early days.
