Plant It forward

A Celebration of Kate Sessions and the Trees of Balboa Park

November 9, 2019

Jacaranda Place (near the Morley Field Sports Complex)

Dig in! Join the Balboa Park Conservancy for a community tree planting to celebrate Kate Sessions, the visionary “Mother of Balboa Park”.  Rooted in hands-on learning, our family-friendly forestry event features climate education, tree tours and park history. Fuel up on food truck fare and birthday cake for Kate under the canopy of your favorite urban forest.

Trees nurture our well-being, help prevent climate change, and provide habitat for wildlife. Plant it forward—and keep Kate’s legacy alive.

Honored as one of the park’s founders, Kate Sessions (born Nov. 8, 1857) is the horticulturalist and landscape architect credited for planting hundreds of trees and flowering plants throughout the park during the late 19th and early 20th century.

The Plant It Forward celebration will include:

  • Horticultural-themed activities for kids
  • Tree walk led by expert arborists
  • Community tree plantings
  • The Drought Tolerant Bluegrass Band
  • Dang Brother Pizza and Gelati & Peccati Food Trucks
  • And more!
