Food Truck Fridays

Fridays, June 1 – September 28, 2018

4:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Plaza de Panama/El Prado walkway
Free Live Entertainment

Kick off your summer weekends in style every Friday evening at Balboa Park’s hottest after-hours event. Visitors of all ages can enjoy live entertainment while eating gourmet dishes from a rotating selection of more than a dozen food trucks parked on the Plaza de Panama and El Prado walkway. Now in its third year, Food Truck Fridays is a program of the Balboa Park Conservancy in partnership with the City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department.

The opening event on June 1 will feature the San Diego Youth Symphony’s “Balboa Park Summer Kick-Off Concert,” preceded by performances from Tavo and Mariachi 3.0 and smaller groups of Youth Symphony musicians. The family-friendly entertainment will provide the perfect side dish to more than a dozen of San Diego’s favorite food trucks, along with games and other family activities.

Since Food Truck Fridays first launched in 2016, Balboa Park has become an increasingly popular date-night destination, giving thousands of park visitors and families a unique opportunity to sample a diverse, rotating selection of gourmet food trucks, serving everything from appetizers and main courses to desserts and specialty beverages, all in one convenient location. Several Balboa Park museums will once again stay open late, with some offering special programs and admission discounts as part of Friday Night Alive!  (formerly Park After Dark). See www.balboaparksummer.org for details.

Throughout the summer, Food Truck Fridays will present different musical performers or DJs each night in the Plaza de Panama. The Plaza’s “living room” setup will be rolled out, including a large artificial lawn for children to play on and giant family game sets. In addition, event sponsors KyXy 96.5, KSON 103.7, Sunny 98.1, and ALT 94.9 will be on hand on select Friday evenings with activities for families. Various Balboa Park cultural institutions will also have booths set up with hands-on activities and crafts for kids. The San Diego Museum of Art will continue to offer $5 admission prices to all visitors after 5:00 p.m. on Friday nights.

Visitors can bring lawn chairs or a blanket to sit in the lawn area in front of the Botanical Building, or enjoy craft beers, wine, and cocktails inside the nearby Panama 66 and Prado restaurants.

Parking and Transportation

Visitors arriving by car should park in the Inspiration Point parking lot at the corner of Park Blvd. and President’s Way and ride the free tram into the park, which will run until 9pm on Friday evenings this summer. Or, avoid traffic and parking hassles altogether by taking MTS, which has buses running along Park Blvd. and Sixth Ave. To plan your trip, visit https://sdmts.com/. Also, Lyft, our official ridesharing partner, is offering app users 20% off (up to $3) one ride to or from Balboa Park with code BPSUMMER on Fridays only, June 1 to September 28, 2:00pm–9:00pm (restrictions apply).
